As the assailants turned tail and fled, Grace stared at the red liquid seeping out of her arm. Blood, she was fairly sure. She pushed beside the wound, and more of it oozed out. Yes, definitely blood.

The cut hurt, but she’d had her body torn into a billion atoms and then reconstructed again. This was different – a dull, throbbing pain – but she could handle it. Katie, on the other hand, appeared to be unconscious.

What to do next? There was no way she’d be able to transport Katie anywhere, even if she had an idea of where to go. With nothing to do but wait, she sat on the grass and folded her legs.

She wasn’t surprised. She couldn’t even be upset. She should’ve known something like this would happen on this planet. The people here simply weren’t rational, and she’d lost sight of that over the past few weeks.

Her eyes drifted to Katie’s prone form. She’d let the human get under her skin. She’d let herself start to believe the entire species was as calm and clear-headed as Katie, but they weren’t. Even Katie herself, she couldn’t really trust.

No, she wouldn’t go as far as to say that. Katie seemed to be head and shoulders above other humans, and Grace had no reason to doubt her. No matter how bad the species was, Katie wasn’t like them. She was humble, kind, caring, sweet. She was a thousand times better than other humans. She could even compare to certain beings in the Interplanetary Union. Heck, Grace actually liked her more than some of them.

Scratching the back of her neck, she let out a sigh. Katie shifted on the ground, and her brow furrowed as she slowly opened her eyes. Her lips parted, and a stream of nonsense poured out.

“What?” Grace asked. “Talk sense, Katie.”

The gibberish continued.

Grace held up her hands. “Stop that. Are you making up a language? I should be able to understand any dialect in the known universe because of my…”

She stopped abruptly, and even though they no longer shared a language, the realization dawned on both of them at once. Katie looked down at her arm while Grace put her fingers to her own. The cut. The microchip.

The only way Grace had of communicating with Katie, or any other human, for that matter.

“This just figures,” she said with exasperation. “Only the beings on this stupid little planet would do something like this. Nowhere, nowhere in the civilized universe would anyone even think of such a crime.”

Her words sounded different now. She hadn’t thought about it before, but they were coming out the same way she spoke them rather than automatically translating to English. And given the shape of her silly human teeth and tongue, they came out garbled and incoherent.

Katie stared at her apologetically, and she said some more nonsense words.

A wave of panic threatened to take over Grace. If she couldn’t communicate, she couldn’t even tell Katie what to do. This human – an admittedly inexperienced, sheltered human – was in charge of both of their well-beings now.
